  • Riders and Trainers | Longspring Sport Horses

ABOUT US > Riders and Trainers Riders and Trainers Riders and Breakers who worked with us Stefanie Egger Stefanie Egger spent two months early in 2025 with Doug Isaacson for a working holiday here. She has been breaking in horses in Austria, Germany, France and Sweden since 2010 working primarily with 2-4 year olds - mostly show jumpers and eventers. She's competed young horses herself all over Europe in eventing and showjumping until 2015. 2015-2020 she was supporting a company to build a mobile horse therapy fleet in Austria, Germany, UK, Ireland and Sweden. Throughout that time she got to do work for Mark Todd and plenty of other world class riders of all disciplines including the racing industry. Since moving to Sweden in 2020 she's cooperated a fair bit with Bruce Goodin, who competed one of the mares she produced up to 1.30m classes as a 6yo. At her current place she is presenting young stallions at the approval tests for the Swedish stud book and shows most of the mares age 3-5yo in similar evaluation environments. Most of them she'd also teach to load both on a trailer and truck before they'd be sent home to their owners. She also spent about 18 months working with an Irish horseman who's known in Sweden to break in and fix sharp horses. Throughout that period horses were constantly coming and going keeping 15 boxes filled at all times. Photo is Stefanie with WOTAN on a very rainy day in Dannevirke. Miriam Ingelfinger Miriam Ingelfiinger spent six months in 2026 with us here at Longspring and helped us with schooling and breaking in. She successfully completed her apprenticeship (horse care and service) at home in Germany and is currently studying Equine Science and Management (B.Sc.). Miri loved being with us and quoted while her time here: "I am so happy to have the opportunity to stay at Longspring and couldn't be more grateful to work with such amazing and talented horses! Schooling and handling these young horses is very rewarding and I am hoping to come back to Longspring after I've finished my studies in Germany!" Photo is Miri with Lady Tamsin LS. Riders currently in partnership with Longspring Izzy Wheeler We are very happy to be in partnership with Izzy Wheeler and Dom Visini. London LS, formerly known as Lord Delamere LS, and Louis Vuitton LS are currently up in Auckland with Izzy and Dom - and we are super excited to see those talented horses develop into future stars! So are Izzy and Dom as Izzy recently quoted: "I love working with Longspring as I really rate their breeding program and have really loved every young horse I have had in partnership. They have the most amazing mix of talent and temperament which makes them so easy to work with! I feel very lucky to ride such quality young horses." Photo is Izzy with London LS up in Auckland. Bundy Philpott (UK) Bundy currently has Dark Side of the Moon LS with her in the UK in partnership, who is FOR SALE. She is very happy to work with such a special horse and quoted in September 2021: "I have had him in partnership with Longspring for over a year now and I love him. He is clever, sensible, scopey and careful and has never said no to anything I've asked from him. Originally, I thought to just get him going and find him a great home but the more I've trained with him the more I see his future as an international horse. I hope with ongoing support from his breeders to travel him to the UK and see if this little horse is a future team NZ representative. He shows me every sign he is a 5-star horse for the future." • Our History | Longspring Sport Horses

ABOUT US > Our History Our History Early History Horses have played an important role in the Vallance family history - starting with the first generation Charles Vallance who arrived from the UK to NZ in 1842. His father was a doctor in England and Charles Vallance who was steeped in medical background, found a steady role in the new land as a horse vet. His sons James and John Vallance imported one of the first TB sires into NZ and set up a stud near Waikanae (oral history!) and rode their mares through the Akaterawas ranges to get in foal. James and John both had great success racing horses in the days when you had 3 races in the one day for the same horse. And as Rupert often commented ... "They probably rode the horse to the races as well!". They won many top races - many of which are considered Group 1 races today. Pride of place on the Longspring mantlepiece is an ornate silver trophy for STURDEE winning the Grand National Steeplechase in 1933 - the trainer was Grannie Maher who was the first woman trainer to win the Melbourne Cup but under her husband's name as woman couldn't train racehorses in those days! Rupert's grandmother Nora was a great horsewoman and we have a few trophies from her days too! Paper chases, hunting and racing were all mainstay activities in the family. Rupert's father Tony Vallance was the local huntsman in the 1950s and Rupert was a whip in the field. Tony was one of the founding members of Equestrian Sport NZ in the 1950s and one of the competitors in the first ever cross country event. Longspring Stud founded in 1982 Rupert's father Tony Vallance chose DISTELFINK from a lineup of young stallions on offer from Adelheidsdorf, the Hanoverian Stallion Training and Testing Centre in 1981. He was rated by Dr Bade who was in charge of the centre as an outstanding prospect for New Zealand because of his jumping and his lighter type to the more old fashioned Winnebago that started the Hanoverian breeding program in NZ a number of years before. We suspect too that at the time, there was a purge underway to clear out the 'chestnut' gene so dominant at the time as DISTELFINK's jumping was incredible. Had he stayed in Germany, he would have gone on to great success there too. Longspring Sport Horses: A Heritage To Be Proud Of The following are excerpts from an article published in SHOWCIRCUIT magazine When asked to name an iconic New Zealand stud, many people will immediately think of Longspring Sport Horses, nestled amongst the rolling green hills of Masterton in the Wairarapa. Now etched in our country’s breeding history, the stud has become renowned for its ability to produce top quality horses for the eventing and show jumping Rupert and Anne Vallance officially set up the stud in 1982, when they syndicated and imported a licensed Hanoverian stallion from West Germany. Distelfink (by Diskus out of St Pr St Doreen by Duker) was one of the first jumping specialised stallion to be brought into New Zealand. In the years that followed, until his death in 2004 at the age of 26, Distelfink proved to be a leading sire of competition horses across all disciplines, but especially show jumping. Overall, Distelfink's most famous show jumping offspring was Super Moth who formed a formidable partnership with Olympic rider John Cottle. By the end of Super Moth’s career, he had won 75 classes including 44 at Grand Prix level. The prize money he collected amounted to more than $92,000 and he was New Zealand Show Jumper of the Year four years in a row. He was named Horse of the Year in 1998, National Champion in 1999 and won the New Zealand North Island Championship twice. Super Moth also won the Bell Tea Grand Prix title at the Horse of the Year twice, the Norwood Gold Cup and the Wanganui Class twice in a row, and the Auckland Easter Classic three times in succession. “We have had the honour of producing some incredibly successful horses over the years,” says co-founder, Anne. “It’s what keeps us going. There’s always the chance that there’s another Super Moth in the paddock! It’s not about just the dollars, there’s simply a lot of pride involved with watching the horses that you have bred climb the ranks, in whatever discipline their owner has chosen for them.” “Our aim is to produce really top quality horses to sell both within New Zealand and overseas,” she adds. “We are passionate about New Zealand sport horse breeding and keeping plenty of thoroughbred blood in the mix. It is a traditional approach to breeding in New Zealand and one that has earned the country a reputation for sport horse breeding on the world stage. The Europeans are keen to introduce more TB blood back into their programmes – we never stopped.” What are the Next Steps for Longspring? Things have changed in the 35 plus years since the stud was first established, but the stud has adapted to remain one step ahead of the game. In 2005, the stud took yet another step into the future when Rupert and Anne’s daughter, Victoria Martin and her husband Brett Martin transformed the stud operation into a sophisticated equine centre specialising in the modern technology of transported semen, embryo transfers and freezing semen for the sport horse industry. This additional arm to the business, called Syenz Equine Reproduction, is a valuable asset, not just for the Vallances but also other breeders in New Zealand, granting them access to some of the world's best jumping bloodlines through Wiemselbach Stud in the Netherlands. Photo shows DISTELFINK with Rupert and Anne Vallance and Wendy Fagan.

ABOUT US > Honour Roll Honour Roll SUPER MOTH LS Distelfink's most famous show jumping offspring was Super Moth who formed a formidable partnership with Olympic rider John Cottle. By the end of Super Moth’s career, he had won 75 classes including 44 at Grand Prix level. The prize money he collected amounted to more than $92,000 and he was New Zealand Show Jumper of the Year four years in a row. Super Moth also won the Bell Tea Grand Prix title at the Horse of the Year twice, the Norwood Gold Cup and the Wanganui Class twice in a row, and the Auckland Easter Classic three times in succession. SUPER MOTH LS was a small horse at 15.3hh and was sold as a dressage horse where he competed successfully to medium level with Amelia White under the name DISTELSTEIN before his jumping career started. John Cottle bought him as part of a consignment to go to Japan but decided after seeing him jump that maybe he should stay in NZ. And the rest is history! Photo shows John Cattle jumping Super Moth LS - the pair took home 44 wins at Grand Prix level! FALCON LS FALCON LS was bred by Tony Vallance out of his old mare QUIVER LS who dam was by the same sire KIRITEA that was the sire of the mother of NZs most famous horse CHARISMA, double Olympic gold medallist. KIRITEA stood at Longspring before it was Longspring! A beautiful big horse, FALCON LS did a bit of eventing before sale to Catriona Williams (nee McLeod) where she took him to the top in showjumping including a trip to Europe where the combination qualified NZ to send showjumpers to the upcoming Olympics. DUTY FREE LS DUTY FREE LS had a big jump but was somewhat un-orthodox style. Maurice Beatson, NZ's veteran show jump rider got the best of DUTY FREE LS and went on to ???? DENVER LS Richard Sutherland spotted this horse as a prospect for Catriona Williams as she moved from ponies on to horses. As a jumper, DENVER LS was very successful and jumped up to B Grade and was one win off A Grade when Catriona discovered he was even better at eventing! The duo clocked up many wins - most notable of which was winning the Australian National Championships and placing 2nd in the 3*** Werribee International Event. He was a powerhouse cross country beating full TBs - who said warmbloods can't gallop! KIWI LOGIC LS DOW JONES LS TOWNSHEND LS Townshend LS (Tiger Moth LS – Dolly LS by Distelfink) is out of a mare bred on a similar cross to the international eventer GV Braveheart (Distelfink – Aureatta by Aureate II) that was placed 7th in the 1998 WEG with Australian rider Olivia Bunn but with a cross to Novel Kingdom being the sire of John Cottle’s Grand Prix showjumper Watch Me. He is a beautiful big strong horse much like his older brother Troy LS. His movement is outstanding as is his jumping. Townshend LS was a beautiful big horse with a kind and willing nature. LARINIUM LS LARINIUM LS is out of the Distelfink mare DABOO by frozen semen from the Dutch Warmblood Sire LARINO. He was broken in as a 4-year-old by Longspring and sold to Logan Massie who started him under saddle. With Logan travelling to Ireland for a stint riding there, his sister Georgia took over and had great success with him including at World Cup level in NZ. He then sold on to a promising young rider where he is much loved. DAMONTEZ LS DAMONTEZ LS is carrying on his fathers legend as a sire of great offspring. He has produced more than 70 youngsters now making their way through in equestrian sport. DAMONTEZ LS was sold as a colt at foot with his mother DUCHESS LS and has since grown into an outstanding individual with a record of success in competition as well as a sire. NZ HORSE OF THE YEAR HONOURS And it doesn't just stop at horses bred by Longspring! Check out how many champions we have had over the years at the most important show of the season with link above. He also had lots of lunging and desensitising practise over the last months and showed a very amazing jumping technique and attitude in his loose jumping! BLOODLINES WASABI's sire WATCHAMACALLIT LS was an outstanding stallion by the stakes winning TB sire WATCHMAN. His pedigree includes a similar cross of Precipitation as the great Furioso xx but with the added value of Hyperion in the dam line as well.
