The legendary DISTELFINK, a fully licensed Hanoverian stallion, was imported in 1982 to stand at Longspring Sport Horse Stud. He was selected early as a potential sire in Germany and reared by the Hunnesrucke Stud for Hanoverian breeding. His like will never be seen in NZ again. He was with us at the start and put the stud on the map. His progeny included international jumpers, dressage horses, eventers and even the lead equine role in the making of Lord of the Rings! His bloodlines have been retained by the stud as sires and broodmares.

BLOODLINES
His sire DISKUS (Hanoverian, 1970, black, 1.65 m) was a Celle State Stud stallion known for producing top‑class showjumpers, including Denizen, The Natural (won the World Cup in 1987 with Katherine Birdsall) and Doreen on the Dutch SJ team. known to produce international jumpers with strong bone, good technique, excellent rideability and very good jumping ability.
DISKUS was by DOMSPATZ, a classic Hanoverian bloodline which was extremely influential in the 1960s–1980s and considered a foundation Hanoverian jumping family.
His dam was the State Premium Mare DOREEN and she was out of the State Premium mare MONTUR showing well above average quality and power in the mare lines. Only 15-25% of mares presented each year achieve that status at the annual Hanoverian classification tours.
PROGENY
DISTELFINK produced numerous domestic and international performers. Some of these include jumping sensations: JEEP SUPERMOTH, NRM FALCON, DUTY FREE, SKYLARK, DEALER, DIOMEDES and world class eventers: NRM DENVER, GV BRAVEHEART, DANZAR…….. DISTELFINK was not only successful at producing performers but also his broodmare daughters are now highly sought after in NZ by breeders for producing jumping and eventing horses!
DISTELFINK was the leading NZ SJ sire with 150+ winners in all disciplines and all levels Inc 15 National Champions. His top showjumper was SUPER MOTH who with John Cottle won 75 jumping classes including 44 at GP or WC level. He sold to the USA and went on to win a WC round there before a tragic accident put an end to his still young career.
DISTELFINK was 3rd on the international FEI (WBFSH) sires list for event horses 1997/98. His best performed eventer was DENVER LS who was a top level showjumper before an eventing career where he won the National One Day Event Championships in Australia and then went on to be 2nd in the National 3DE in Australia – after many wins in NZ. His other top eventers included DANZAR and GV BRAVEHEART.’
DISTELFINK also produced top dressage horses TARJE, DISPLAY, and fulWINTER DAMSON, and showhunters CATS WHISKERS, DECORATION, DANICA, DISTANCIA and SPARROW, showing his undoubted versatility.
DISTELFINK LS is now a leading grand sire with his daughters producing over 50 ESNZ registered youngsters the quality of Jedi Warrior, Attorney General, Tiger Woods LS, Giggles, Mr Wiggles, Dunstan Springfield, Wishing Warrior, Dansing, Cheleken Casadora, Henton Encore, Henton Exclusive, Winter Warrior, Rodney Red, NZ Pow, DT Stevie Nics, Golden Mile, Henton Distinctive, Armillion MVNZ, Astek Napoleon, Lingo, Coloraddo MVNZ, Day Boy, Traffic LS, Tres Bein LS, 10cc LS, Schimmel Warrior, Tiger Tale LS, NZ Fireball, Kaleidoscope, Lavita, Caledonia MVNZ, Alltech Eon, DT Jack Sparrow, Wild Card II, Timbuktoo LS, Trixie LS to name some.
