... the one stop stallion shop!

Longspring Stud was officially set up in 1982, but breeding horses has always been a major interest of the Vallance family. Rupert represents the 5th generation of Vallance on the family farm and has been around stallions all his life.

Longspring Stud has a long history of producing top horses for equestrian sport and with the arrival back at stud of the next generation of Vallance on the farm through Victoria, the stud is expanding into breeding horses specifically for racing.

Thoroughbreds for Racing

The foundation sire for the new Thoroughbred business is Colombia (Zabeel - Eight Carat by Pieces of Eight) who sold as a yearling in 1998 for $1,600,000 dollars. His pedigree is one of NZ's best and he has already sired 3 SW and 3SP with progeny winning close to NZ $4 million.

Breeding thoroughbreds is to become the new business for Rupert and Anne as Victoria takes over the extensive sport horse business.

Equestrian Sport - jumping and eventing

The sport horse sires on offer include a collection of NZ bred stallions with the bloodlines of Distelfink who stood at Longspring until his death in 2003 and was NZ's best showjumping sire for over 14 years in a row. He was also 3rd on the International FEI WBFSH rankings as an event sire in 1997.  The stud has 3 of his sons and a grandson at stud.

In terms of sport horses, the stud also stands two thoroughbreds - Hula Town, one of NZ's leading sires of international class eventers and Watchman who is a well performed racehorse with a bottom line that traces back to Maureen, the dam of Furioso - one of the world's best showjumping bloodlines.

Through associate company Syenz which does all of the stud's equine reproduction work, the stud also acts as a stallion service station and stands stallions for other breeders and for overseas based studs through frozen semen or shipped chilled semen.  The Don's Sting, a TB by Don Eduardo is having his first season with Syenz at Longspring this season.
